A New Focus for Junior Career Evening

Alumni and Friends Share Career Skills, Advice, and Stories with Students
Video created by Kenny Clay '25

Webb alumni and friends joined junior students on campus on February 23
rd to partake in Junior Career Evening. This annual event, hosted by the Alumni Council in conjunction with the Alumni Office brought eight speakers to campus to educate students on four different career skills and topics. Focusing on career skills and advice allowed the students to learn information that they can utilize in any industry they choose to enter and even use as they look towards applying and interviewing for college.

In the Career Path Advice session, Doug Lee ’96 and Whitney Wharton ’05 spoke to students about their personal journeys from academics to career. Not everyone ends up in the career that they planned, and that’s ok. Doug and Whitney shared stories from their individual experiences and finding other paths to their careers.

During the Networking and Interview Skills session, students heard from Kathy Fredrich ’02 and Kunal Shah ’97 about navigating through in person professional experiences such as interviews and networking events. The students spent time practicing the simple but effective art of the handshake and how this simple gesture can speak volumes about a person.

Resume Writing was led by Alexis de la Rosa ’11 and Megan Key (daughter of Jim Hawkins ’70) who shared tips on how students can craft the perfect resume to help them stand out on paper. They stressed the importance of building your personal brand, aligning your passions, and creating clear and concise methods to share information that can help a recruiter identify you as a potential candidate.

Christina Dong ’18 and Jill Hawthorne (from Pitzer College’s Career Services) talked students through the College Transition & Internships session. During this session, Christina spoke about her experience as a recent college graduate and how persistence landed her a role at Impulse Space. Jill provided her expert knowledge in services that a college can provide for students while they are transitioning into their careers.

The evening culminated with cookies and cocoa inside Stockdale Community Center where students were able to network and continue the conversations from their sessions with speakers and other Alumni Council members in attendance.

Programs like this help enrich the students experience while on their path to self-discovery. It would not be possible without the help from our amazing alumni and friends community. A very special thank you to each of our speakers! If you are interested in speaking at a future Junior Career Evening or similar event, please email the Alumni Office at alumni@webb.org.
